Extensive breeding efforts in the United States are actively seeking to restore American chestnut genetics which are highly susceptible to Chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica). Chestnuts offer excellent food and habitat for wildlife and are an excellent gluten-free source of carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamin C for humans as well. Mature chestnut trees reach a height of about 60 feet.
