Willows have a wide range of uses, including livestock fodder, living hedges, windbreaks, streambank stabilization, wildlife habitat (host to a large number of Lepidoptera species), ornamental/landscaping, baskets, and medicine. The Maryland Conservation Planning guide includes three willows among its recommended trees (and thus are eligible for reimbursement for USDA-approved conservation plantings): black willow (Salix nigra) Austree hybrid willow (Salix matsudana x alba ‘Austree’) and Streamco purpleosier willow (Salix purpurea ‘Streamco’). This year, we have Austree cuttings, in future years, we should have Black willow and Streamco willow.
