Building a “Nutwork”: Turning tree crops into staple crops

I wrote an article for PLENTY, which is the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve’s own magazine. It’s called “Building a ‘Nutwork’: Working together to turn tree crops into staple crops.” The title and the article sum up my vision for the work that I do and how I want to support community and nature. Planting a chestnut tree in our backyards can satisfying and nourishing, but most of us don’t have the time or bandwidth to make our own bread with chestnut flour or jam with elderberries. We will have to work together to create new food supply chains. It’s an exciting opportunity to support local jobs, rural economy, community food resilience, and greater interconnection.
